Sales and Marketing Ethics in the R&M World: An Investigative Editorial

Authors Note: Wow. I can’t believe that I had to write this editorial. With an industry that is over $1.2 Trillion in size, in the USA alone, what is the point of some of the sleazy activity going on? It really bothers me the more that I have been digging into this, and the fact is simple: it does not seem to matter the size or previous reputation of the companies involved. I guess I can understand some slips – Heaven knows I have made a few of my own, and I am probably throwing stones in a glass house. But, when I see a skewed playing field and some companies creating potentially deadly, in my opinion, situations for the sake of outdoing their competitors, my conscience and need to do the right thing has just been kicking my butt.

As you read through this editorial, keep in mind that the systems I am mentioning and situations are examples of what is going on in our industry. The tools, systems, training systems, etc. are not necessarily horrible, in themselves, the ethical use of marketing and sales techniques is the issue. I guess the individuals involved do not think their equipment or systems would stand up in a level playing field. Personally, I would rather walk away from my business if I had to resort to such tactics.
