Authors Note:
There have been changes in
philosophy on all levels that have been occurring at a faster and faster pace,
especially in our industry. As the philosophy of business changed from
engineering-based management to cost-based management, philosophies related to
maintenance remained constant through until the 1960s, changing first with the
aircraft industry. In the 1970s, our military started making changes to
maintenance philosophy which then slowly took hold within industry. With the
continued application of information technology, politics, society, and other
industry/community changes, business philosophies changed at a rapid pace
followed, reluctantly, by the maintenance community.

Wow. I can’t believe that I had to write this editorial. With an industry that
is over $1.2 Trillion in size, in the USA alone, what is the point of some of
the sleazy activity going on? It really bothers me the more that I have been
digging into this, and the fact is simple: it does not seem to matter the size
or previous reputation of the companies involved. I guess I can understand some
slips – Heaven knows I have made a few of my own, and I am probably throwing
stones in a glass house. But, when I see a skewed playing field and some
companies creating potentially deadly, in my opinion, situations for the sake of
outdoing their competitors, my conscience and need to do the right thing has
just been kicking my butt.

2008 was an interesting year. From the airline
and FAA scandals early in the year to the housing bust, financial bailouts,
world economy issues, and a dramatic US Presidential election – it has not been
boring! Companies are going under, credit is still an issue, public and media
sentiment seems to be drifting back towards an anti-union stance (actually, a
common cycle), and the term ‘blog-o-sphere’ has become a common term within the
news. Fuel prices peaked at over $4/gallon, public sentiment and awareness
drove the ‘green’ and alternative fuel movements, only for those to collapse as
soon as prices dropped again. At SUCCESS by DESIGN®, we published two books
(Physical Asset Management for the Executive and Electrical Motor Diagnostics 2nd
Edition), expanded our services, received more awards for our energy and
maintenance work, supported alternative energy school projects, continued our
studies on the workforce, EMD, and RME&E, and made some exciting decisions
relating to our motor diagnostics training and publishing.
